Pokémon has returned with a *New* installment of a classic – Pokémon Snap. Of course, this time around, it’s going by the moniker: New Pokémon Snap, and will be releasing on April 30, 2021 for the Nintendo Switch line of consoles.

I was a little too young to appreciate the original release at the time (don’t @ me…) so the nostalgic take on this game doesn’t really reach me. But, being an avid Pokémon fan for most of my life – side note, whose excited for Pokémon Legends in 2022? – I thought this side quest was not going to be worth my time.

But, with last week’s web event that showcased more of the game, boy was I wrong.

Pokémon created the perfect concept to join photography, with that of the video game mega-franchise. With the increased graphics of the Nintendo Switch console, it makes even more sense. But let’s look at the overall highlights of what this game is about.

Explore. Shoot. Share

In New Pokémon Snap, you travel around the Lental region to capture unique traits, actions, and behaviors of the various creatures you come across. Shoutout to our wildlife photographers out there 😉

In the game, you can use numerous items – including fruit, berries, and “Illumina” orbs – to increase the chances of experiencing a unique action. Capture one of these unique events on your camera, and have them rated by Lental’s professor to build up your Photodex.

The new game offers online connectivity to share your captures with other players around the world – creating a social experience that rewards players with photo features the more that their images are upvoted.

Editing

Pokémon took their game a step further with allowing users to fully edit their photos before including in their personal albums. Brightness, blur, and zoom cropping are just some of the parameters you have the power to change. They’ve even added concepts for applying stickers, custom borders, and frames to any photos to really give you the maximum opportunity to create a unique piece of art before sharing with the online community.
